Please correct me if my this is blatantly obvious but I can't work out how to create variables in Savitar, I'm assuming Savitar supports variables to hold values for later use. If anyone could help me I would be most appreciative.

Yes, savitar does support variables. They're called "macros". Have a look at the sub-section of the manual entitled, "Wildcards and Macros" within the triggers section.
